2 Kings 6:8-18
“Open his eyes that he may see.”
[a] How often does the situation or the task seem to overwhelm you?
It’s seems too big, or even hopeless.
[b] There are two ways of looking at everything - OUR way, and GOD’S way!
[c] The prophet Elisha, had learned to look with SPIRITUAL VISION!
[d] His servant needed a lesson - perhaps we could take a leaf out of his book!
[a] I wonder if you have ever heard of the Rev. Sam Workman.
[b] Sam accepted the call to Abbots Cross Congregational Church, in Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland. It was really a last ditch effort as the church was on the verge of closure!
[c] The church had 20 in the congregation and was over £16,000 in debt – a lot of money a few decades ago!
[d] But Sam’s spiritual vision, saw something else for the future.
[e] In that situation, our instinct, would be to frantically start coffee mornings, jumble sales, sales of work, flag days and the like.
[f] But Sam flatly refused to go down that track, feeling that if his people were right with God living holy lives; if there was no discontent, bickering, backbiting or fighting - God’s resources would come and meet the need!
[g] The Church Secretary at the time, John Houston said of Rev. Workman in a press report, “He did nothing at all, but preach the Gospel - no coffee parties, jumble sales or other fund-raising activities. People flocked in. He had a weekly Bible Study of over 300.” He went on to say, that the church had become “one of the strongest in Northern Ireland in every sense of the word.” He said they were getting 600-700 in each morning and evening service on a Sunday.
Extra accommodation had to be added to the church, a new manse had been built, a new suite of halls built for the church - and the church was not in debt!
[a] What have we been praying for and expecting in today’s meeting?
[b] How long is it since we invited a friend to the meeting, believing they could be saved? Most people who are saved, become Christians, because a friend has invited them to their church.
[c] WE MUST HAVE THE VISION?? THE BIBLE SAYS, WITHOUT IT - THE PEOPLE PERISH!! YOU SEE, WITHOUT IT, WE HAVE NO AWARENESS OR EXPECTANT FAITH OF WHAT GOD CAN DO!!
[d] If we just expect people to come in through the door – it very seldom happens! We’ve got to actually bring them – an invitation on it’s own is not usually enough. Often people have stood at the door of a church, and couldn’t summon up the courage to go in!
[e] After I’d preached one Sunday, someone said to me “I don’t know how anyone could sit under that message tonight, and not make a decision.”
[f] Once we get them here, then our work has just begun – for we’ve got to pray them into the Kingdom! The more we pray, the more conviction will come!
[a] Elisha’s vision was firstly a VISION OF LIGHT!
[b] What he saw, were chariots of fire.
[c] They had gone out, early in the morning, so most probably it was still dark, and Elisha could see these myriads of Heavenly angels illuminating the dark sky. The mountain was covered with them!
[d] Elisha’s vision was also a VISION OF LORDSHIP!
[e] So many Christians are living in fear of the devil’s forces which surround them, and they need to take heed of Elisha’s words, in verse 16, when he says, “They that are with us are more than they that be with them!”
[f] Nothing that the devil can attack us with can begin to threaten the ability of God to “GIVE US THE VICTORY AGAIN AND AGAIN!”
[g] Elisha’s vision was a VISION OF LIBERTY!
[h] The enemy forces were surrounding the city, but IT DIDN’T MATTER – FOR GOD WAS IN CONTROL OF THE SITUATION!
[i] It did matter to the servant, “What are we going to do”, he said frantically!
[j] He was NOT looking with SPIRITUAL VISION! That was why all was doom and gloom!
[a] If we don’t look with spiritual vision, the same will be true with us! We will only see the obvious problems - not the answers! We will see defeat, and not victory!
[b] Elisha prayed in verse 17, “OPEN HIS EYES THAT HE MAY SEE!”
[c] Oh that the LORD MIGHT TOUCH OUR SPIRITUAL VISION just now - that we might see the PROVISION, PROTECTION, AND POWER of God!!
[d] Jesus could say, “With God, all things are possible!”
[e] Do you believe it? More than that, DO YOU SEE IT in your God given SPIRITUAL VISION!
You see, if it’s true at all – it has to be true for your Corps or Church!
May our vision be renewed, and our expectation be recharged, with true 20/20 perfect spiritual vision!
