Reading: Exodus 34:1-10 & 29-35

[a] Some years ago, we were in Aberdeen (North Scotland) one evening, and suddenly became quite awestruck by the sight we beheld, for we had never realised what the 'NORTHERN LIGHTS OF OLD ABERDEEN' meant until that moment!

[b] It was as if the sky was filled with a multiplicity of little rainbows - it was absolutely amazing!!

[c] It is at such times that we realise that white light as we term it, isn't white at all, but made up of all the different colours of the rainbow.

[d] That should be the kind of beauty people see, when we speak of the LIGHT OF GOD SHINING THROUGH OUR LIVES!

God wants us to be like that rainbow - allowing His Light to be split into it's spectrum in our lives, that all may see the glorious colours in us of the Fruit of the Spirit, through our Christian living. In other words - "LET THE BEAUTY OF JESUS BE SEEN IN ME!"

[f] Jesus terms himself `the Light of the World' and promises `THE LIGHT OF LIFE' to all who follow him.

[g] Men and women need no longer walk in darkness, ignorant of the truth, cut off from God, and blinded by sin.

[h] They can `live in the light - just as he is in the light'.

To become a Christian is to move out of darkness into light.

[i] God's people are `like light for the whole world'.

They must let that light shine out to others.

[a] Sometimes we look at the darkness of this world, caused by the greatness of it's sin, and we feel so insignificant - how can our little light make a difference in darkness of such intensity??

[b] If you were to walk into a house, in the pitch black, would you pour disdain upon the light of a little match??

Not at all, because it could illuminate your way to find the greater light, through guiding you to the light switch!

[c] Surely, as Christians, that is our job!!

WE only need to give enough light to lead the sinner to the Light of the World!!

[d] The light of the Church, was kindled at the fire of Pentecost, and has never been extinguished!!

[a] In our Bible reading, the face of Moses shone, with the Shikina Glory of God!

[b] It happened, because he'd been with God on Mount Sinai, and had quite literally been infused with God's Glory!!

[c] You and I will not be able to show the Light of God to the world, if we do not spend the time with Him which we should!

[d] I've got a re-chargeable torch, and if I forget to plug it in, soon there is no light left to shine!! YOU AND I ARE NO DIFFERENT!! We can't give out what we don't take in!!

[e] You remember the foolish virgins who Jesus spoke about, who missed the wedding, because they had lost the ability to shine - why? Because they had no oil in their lamps!!

[f] As we are well aware, the Scriptures speak of the Holy Spirit as OIL, AND HIS FULLNESS, ONLY COMES AS WE SPEND TIME SEEKING GOD!!

D. T. Niles says in 'Jesus' preaching':

To be a disciple was to be set apart from other people. They were to be clearly different. Jesus called them the `salt of the earth', the `light of the world'; the very distinctiveness of their lives and characters would change the society in which they lived. He did not expect society to welcome this distinctiveness. He himself faced constant opposition, and he promised them no better. He taught them to expect persecution and rejection.

"Evangelism is just one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread."

[a] Can you imagine two things which are more opposite that darkness & light?

[b] The Bible often uses the contrast of light and darkness to show the absolute difference between God and the forces of evil.

[c] `God is light, and there is no darkness at all in him.' God is altogether good. His holiness is so utterly pure that he is said to `live in the light that no one can approach'.

[d] In contrast to this the forces of evil are called `the cosmic powers of this dark age'.

John in his Gospel, describes the spiritual battle between `LIGHT' (God and goodness) and `DARKNESS' (Satan and everything evil). `The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out.' In the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Light won the victory over darkness.

[a] The Bible tells us that the Heavenly City, The New Jerusalem, has no need of sun or moon, or any form of artificial light, for God Himself IS THE LIGHT, AND I WOULD GUESS, THAT BECAUSE THAT LIGHT WILL BE EVERYWHERE, THERE WILL BE NO SHADOWS OR DARK PLACES OF ANY DESCRIPTION!

[b] At last, in the new heaven and earth, the light of God's presence will be a constant reality. There will be no darkness, no night, no lamps, not even sunlight.

All God's people will be with him, and He will be their light.

1 John 1:5; 1 Timothy 6:16; Ephesians 6:12; John 1:4-9; 8:12; 1 John 1:7; Matthew 5:14-16; Revelation 21:23-24; 22:5

[c] One of the translations of Revelation 21, puts it like this:

22 I did not see a temple in the city, because its temple is the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb. 23 The city has no need of the sun or the moon to shine on it, because the glory of God shines on it, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 The peoples of the world will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their wealth into it. 25 The gates of the city will stand open all day; they will never be closed, because there will be no night there. 26 The greatness and the wealth of the nations will be brought into the city. 27 But nothing that is impure will enter the city, nor anyone who does shameful things or tells lies. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of the living will enter the city.

[*] In the final stages of the renovation of our building in Port Glasgow, it was brought to the attention of the contractors, that no emergency lighting had been installed in the Ladies toilets which had no windows. So if the lights failed, with no windows, how would someone find their way out - even in daytime?

So they ended up agreeing to put fluorescent signs on the door, so people could see the way out!

[a] Can you see God's plan, of lots of little lights like you and me, shining in the darkness, guiding people to find the LIGHT OF THE WORLD!

[b] Have you allowed God's fire to ignite you?

[c] Are you allowing God's Oil to fill you and keep you burning?

[d] People are in such terrible darkness - they cannot see those things which are so plain to you and me who live and walk in the Light of God!

[e] We must shine in the darkness for their sake!

READ ISAIAH 60:1-2 (Living Bible)

"Arise My people! Let your light shine for all the nations to see. For the glory of the Lord is streaming from you. Darkness as black as night shall cover all the peoples of the earth, but the glory of the Lord will shine from you."
