READING 2 TIMOTHY 1:7-12
[*] An old farmer got married, but got told off from his new wife, after she heard him refer to ‘my farm’ and ‘my animals’. She told him, that now they were married – everything was now shared, and should be referred to as ‘ours’. Early the next morning, the wife was awakened in the dark with a loud bump! “What are you doing John?” she asked. He answered, “I tripped over OUR brassiere, trying to get into OUR trousers, so I could go and milk OUR cows!”
[a] One day, when I was visiting someone, I saw the children showing the trait that comes out in every child - the possessiveness over something that was their personal property.
[b] Their little brother wanted to play with the toy, but big brother decided to dismantle it first, knowing that little brother couldn’t put it back together!
[c] We smile, and say “They’re only children!”
[d] How often does a child grab it’s toy, with the exclamation, “It’s MINE!”
[e] Ownership is very important in a child’s mind!
[f] Often within families this is also true! My wife’s sister in Blackpool, always talks about “OUR LILY” when speaking about my wife.
[g] I want us to look for a few moments at things are
OURS, THROUGH CHRIST!
[a] The first ESSENTIAL THING on which all else is based is found in verse 10 of our Bible reading.
[b] It speaks of the grace of God, and says it, “...is now made manifest by the appearing of OUR SAVIOUR Jesus Christ.”
[c] The Irish Evangelist Billy Mullan, used to advice people, “TAKE JESUS HOME WITH YOU!”
[d] When we speak about Jesus being our PERSONAL SAVIOUR, we really do mean it!
[e] When we invite Him into our lives, He quite literally becomes OUR SAVIOUR! IS HE YOUR SAVIOUR TONIGHT?
[f] The chorus writer says,
“He holds my hand, Jesus holds my hand, Safely to Heaven He leads the way,
He is my keeper from day to day.”
The song says, “What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear.”
[g] Is that your relationship with Jesus tonight? It can be - if you permit it!
He says, “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.”
[a] Paul, in Thessalonians, in 2 Thes. 2:14, speaks about “OUR GOSPEL”
[b] The Gospel is a Gospel of POWER! In Romans 1:16, we are told that it is “the POWER OF GOD UNTO SALVATION TO EVERY ONE THAT BELIEVETH.”
[c] There is no-one outside the all-encompassing message of the Gospel.
THE DEEPEST DYED SINNER CAN BE FORGIVEN AND GIVEN A NEW LIFE, if they will repent of their sin, and turn to the Saviour!
[d] After all, the Apostle Paul speaks of himself as the greatest sinner of all, in 1 Timothy 1:15, and he quite literally says, “If God can save me, the worst of sinners, then there is no-one beyond the reach of His loving hand!”
[e] Many religions will tell people what to do, but leave them powerless to do it!
CHRISTIANITY SAYS, “WE HAVE A LIVING CHRIST WHO WILL COME INTO YOUR HEART ENABLING YOU TO LIVE IN NEWNESS OF LIFE!”
[f] The hymnwriter says, “For the Lion of Judah shall break every chain, and give us the victory again and again!”
[g] The Bible speaks of Jesus, as the One Who IS ABLE TO KEEP US FROM FALLING! (Jude 1:24)
[a] The Bible speaks about OUR HEARTS! Not the bit of us that pumps the blood around, but in the same sense we speak of when we speak of giving someone our heart in love, or our heart being full of emotion.
[b] I remember seeing a poem once, that spoke about the person they loved, having title deeds on their heart. I’m quite sure they didn’t have in mind, something red, and fleshy, with tubes coming in and out!
[c] We’re speaking about the very seat of our emotions! That which motivates our every action! So unless we have allowed the Lord to work on that central part of us, what hope can there be for change, or for living righteous lives??
[d] This is why God says in Ezekiel 36:26, “A NEW HEART WILL I GIVE YOU.” Patching up the old one doesn’t work! WE NEED A NEW NATURE - AND NEW MOTIVATION!
[e] Well do we sing the children’s chorus which says, “Into my heart, Into my heart, come into my heart, Lord Jesus.”
[a] The Bible also speaks in 1 Peter 2:24, of OUR SINS! It says, that Jesus “... bore our sins in His Own body on the tree.”
[b] Sometimes, in this happy-go-lucky world, we fail to realise the seriousness of sin. In Jeremiah 17:1, we are told that sin is
“... written with a pen of iron, and the point of a diamond.”
IN OTHER WORDS, IT’S LITERALLY ENGRAVED ON THE HEART!
[c] Now if I were to go into the local jewellers, and buy my wife a gold pendant, (she’s probably saying “a chance would be a fine thing.”) I might want to get it engraved with some words of great meaning, like
“Both now and forever, There’s nothing can sever,
The love that I have for you; If I may be bold,
This little piece of gold, Will prove that my heart is true.”
[d] Now if, and I make no promises, in the next twenty years I did that, then, that message would be engraved on that pendant, and could not be removed!
[e] That’s exactly the way sin is engraved on our hearts - which is why we need the miracle of God re-creating us within! Giving us a NEW HEART
[f] When Jesus died on the cross, He opened the way to forgiveness for you and me, by bearing OUR SIN in His Own body on that cross!
[g] That’s how much He loves you and me!
In Isaiah 53:6, we read, “.... the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”
[a] What a fantastic promise in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
[b] If you’re here tonight, and have not had those sins in your life dealt with - don’t you think it’s about time. Don’t you think the Lord’s been knocking on your heart’s door long enough.
[c] Remember, God says, “My Spirit shall not always strive with man.”
[d] In the words of the marketing forces of the world we live in,
“This offer is for a limited period only! Don’t miss it!”
[e] Just remember, if you do,
IT’S HELL, AND NOT HEAVEN, AT THE END OF LIFE’S JOURNEY!
