MOSES SERIES - NUMBER SEVEN
MANNA IN THE WILDERNESS
Bible Reading: Exodus 16:1-16
[a] A number of years ago, a friend of ours was out of work, and at
that point he was not entitled to any benefits.
[b] He, his wife and children started to pray, because the larder was
empty - not a bit of food in the house.
[c] While they were still praying, like manna from heaven, a large box
of groceries appeared on the doorstep - ample to feed the family until
finances were sorted out.
[d] So often we hear of similar stories, of the Lord moving someoneís
heart to help another who is in need.
[e] Indeed, I have mentioned in the past, this was the principle on
which George Mullar founded his orphan homes.
They would have nothing to eat, but they would sit down at the table,
set for a meal - they would say grace, and in through the door would
come people bearing food, because the Lord had moved their hearts!
GOD NEVER LET THEM DOWN!
[a] The first thing I want you to notice from our Bible Reading is that
the Children of Israel were going through the WILDERNESS OF SIN !!
[b] As we look around the world, can we doubt for one moment that
WE TOO are going through the WILDERNESS OF SIN!!
[c] But as God was with them in the wilderness, so too He is with each
one of us.
[d] He never left them for a moment! He never turned His back upon
them, even in the midst of all their grumbling and moaning against Him!
[e] The Lord was not unaware of their needs!
The Bible says in Matthew 6:8, that the Lord is fully aware of our
needs before we even utter those needs in prayer!
[f] So God is aware of our needs! He knows our problems! More than
that, He is aware of the underlining reason that they exist.
He doesnít just want to treat the symptoms! He wants to cure the
[g] Sometimes peopleís needs, are directly linked to some problem in
their spiritual experience which requires attention.
[a] There are times in our experience, when we are called to go through
the refining fire, and perhaps our faith begins to waver, because we
cannot understand Godís plan, and the reason for our suffering.
[b] So too it was with the Children of Israel! As soon as they get
hungry, THEY THINK GOD HAS DESERTED THEM!
Things have got HARD AND DIFFICULT, SO GOD CANNOT BE
[c] Their reaction was to WISH THEY WERE BACK IN SLAVERY!!
TO WISH THIS WAS A REJECTION OF ALL GOD HAD DONE FOR
[d] It reminds me somewhat of ESAU, who SOLD HIS BIRTHRIGHT
for a BOWL OF THICK SOUP!
[e] I wonder how many professing Christians have wished they WERE
BACK IN THE SLAVERY OF SIN!!
After all that the Lord has done to deliver them - He Who came to ĎSET
THE CAPTIVE FREEí - there are still some who seem to desire to be
back in the Devilís captivity!!
[f] They complained bitterly.
"ITíS YOUR FAULT" they told Moses and Aaron
[g] Their reply was simple, "YOUR MURMERINGS ARE NOT
AGAINST US BUT AGAINST THE LORD!"
[h] Down through the years, on a number of occasions,
people have come to me COMPLAINING BITTERLY ABOUT WHAT I HAVE PREACHED!!
[i] But if I have been faithful in presenting the Word of God, then,
like Moses, their complaint is NOT AGAINST ME, BUT AGAINST
[j] When someone is determined not to change, or be rebuked from
Scripture, or determined not to go Godís way, then their discomfort,
their conviction and their guilt, is often vented on the preacher!!
[a] GOD PROMISES AMPLE PROVISION! But ONLY FOR A DAY
AT A TIME!!
[b] In the New Testament too, Jesus teaches, that we must live one day
at a time! "Let tomorrow take care of the things of itself" He says
in Matthew 6:34, and in the Lordís Prayer, He instructs us to pray,
"Give us THIS DAY, our daily bread."
[c] In other words, LIVE TODAY, AND LET GOD TAKE CARE OF
In answer to faith and prayer, He will give you what you need for today
- no more!!
[d] The Christian pathway is, and always will be, ONE STEP AT A TIME!
STEP BY STEP
He does not lead me year by year, nor even day by day.
But step by step my path unfolds, my Lord directs my way.
Tomorrowís plans I do not know, I only know this minute.
But He will say, "This is the way, by faith now walk ye in it."
And I am glad that it is so, todayís enough to bear,
And when tomorrow comes, His grace shall far esceed itís care.
What needs to worry then or fret? The God Who gave His Son,
Holds all my moments in His hand, and gives them, one by one.

[e] God does not ask us to go anywhere in life without providing the
means and the strength for it to be possible.
[a] Godís promise was fulfilled, and the MANNA came.
The word MANNA means "WHAT IS IT!"
[b] Well, weíre not a lot wiser today, except to say from the account,
that it could well have been some kind of mushroom, which would account
for itís shape, itís rapid growth, and the obvious nourishment it gave
to those who ate it.
[c] As we are aware today, mushrooms are both nourishing, and can be
prepared in many different ways.
God had fulfilled His word, and they grew in profuseness - they would
need to, to feed a whole nation!!
[d] However, mushrooms on their own would not have been much
good as a staple diet whatever some vegetarians may tell you!
But of course the Lord had thought of that! He had provided an enormous
flock of quails to "DROP IN FOR A MEAL!"
[e] Now it would be easy to pass over this fact, without realising the
vastness of this miracle!
ON THIS OCCASION, WE ARE PROBABLY SPEAKING OF AROUND
A MILLION OR A MILLION AND A HALF PEOPLE!
[f] The Lord must have been planning the quail population for quite
some time to make this provision for His people. Remember the words of the song Ė
"HE PLANS FOR YOU IN LOVE - FOR HE STILL CARES."
[g] Just think of it - a million plus people to be fed on birds!
I think the thought of it would even give the turkey farmer Bernard Matthews
[h] But make no mistake, as impossible as it seemed - GOD DID IT!!
[i] No matter how great our personal needs may be -
they are small in comparison with Godís provision to His people!
[a] Whatever pathway you feel at this moment that God is calling you to
walk upon - of this you can be certain - HE WILL MAKE EVERY PROVISION FOR YOU!
[b] Even if it is officership, local officership, band, songsters, pub ministry,
young peopleís work - whatever it is - GOD WILL MEET YOUR NEEDS!!
[c] What He requires from you and me, is that we accept His will and
direction for our lives.
[d] God will fulfil His part of the bargain, if you and I fulfil ours!!
[e] Have you heard Him speak in your heart?
Should you be making a new commitment to Him just now??
The opportunity is yours to make things right with the Lord. Will you
come? He waits to receive you!
