MOSES SERIES NUMBER 2
THE BURNING BUSH
Reading: Exodus 3:1 14, also 4:1 & 10 12
[a] Today’s subject has so much which could be said about it, that it could cover the ministry of a dozen meetings, and still not do it justice.
[b] I speak about the CALL OF MOSES AT THE BURNING BUSH.
[c] Not many days ago we spoke about the BABY IN THE BULRUSHES, and applied some parallels to the early earthly life of Jesus.
[d] I feel that although there were far reaching events in the life of Moses, which indeed cover a period exceeding the lifetime of many other people. For us today, on the first Sunday of a New Year, I feel it is important for us to look at the CALL OF MOSES, and the choice which Moses had to make, to follow the plan of God for his life in the future!
[e] It could of course be claimed that when Moses took the law into his own hands, in chapter 2:12, and murdered the Egyptian who was mistreating an Israelite, that he put back the deliverance of his people, perhaps by as much as sixty years.
[f] If that was true, then a whole nation had an awful lot to pay, for the failure of one man to follow the leading of God!!
[g] I think we must be each one aware, of the very important fact, that our personal failure to follow the will of God for our lives, could affect adversely the lives of a lot of others!
[h] Not one of us knows what this new year will hold, but we do know that the only way to make a SPIRITUAL SUCCESS of it, is to go forward with our hand in the hand of God, and a determination filling our hearts to do His Will irrespective of the cost!!
[a] The words of the song say, "I'll go in the strength of the Lord."
God told Moses in chapter 4:19, "GO, RETURN TO EGYPT!" and in chapter 3:12, He had promised, "CERTAINLY I WILL BE WITH THEE!"
[b] As you and I venture into our unknown future of 1992, THE PROMISE OF GOD IS JUST AS REAL AND JUST AS SURE FOR YOU AND ME!!
To you and to me today, He says, "CERTAINLY I WILL BE WITH THEE!" or as He puts it afresh in Hebrews 13:5, "I WILL NEVER LEAVE THEE, NOR FORSAKE THEE."
[c] We may not feel up to some of the tasks that will be ours MOSES CERTAINLY DIDN'T!!
[d] There were plenty of remarks, and jokes, passed about the age and capabilities of the previous American President Ronald Regan! You will no doubt remember the staggering old communists who used to be in charge of the Soviet Union.
[e] He could think of a multitude of reasons why God wouldn't want HIM!
i. He had an INFERIORITY COMPLEX "Who am I ?" (3:11)
ii. He felt INTELLECTUALLY UNSUITABLE "What shall I say ?" (3:13)
iii. Testimony believed UNCONVINCING "They will not believe me." (4:1)
iv. He had a SPEECH IMPEDIMENT "I am slow of speech !" (4:10)
v. Done better by SOMEONE ELSE " Send someone else !" (4:13 L.B.)
"I'm not the person for a job like that!" (3:11)
APART FROM THAT, AT THE BURNING BUSH MOSES WAS ABOUT 80 YEARS OLD !!
[f] Yet in spite of all this HE WAS GOD'S CHOSEN VESSEL FOR THE DELIVERANCE OF THE WHOLE NATION OF ISRAEL!
Here is God yet again, as it says in 1Corinthians 1:27, choosing "the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty."
[g] Here was God in essence saying to Moses, something which He says again in Zechariah 4:6, "Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit saith the Lord."
[a] The thought of DELIVERANCE must have just about blown the mind of this old shepherd which is what he was by that time!
[b] He was quite comfortable, thank you very much!
He had fled from Egypt, perhaps 50 - 60 years previously, had married, and raised a family.
In fact, there were probably many events of his early life, he had difficulty in recalling after all that time! He had not kept contact, and didn't even know if his family in Egypt were alive or dead. (4:18)
[c] The captivity was such a long-standing thing, it was simply looked upon as a fact of life! Often when we don't see things happen today or tomorrow in answer to our prayers, we become despondent and lack faith!
How much more the Israelites, they had been in bondage over 200 years!!
[d] Little wonder Moses had to go and tell them that I AM had sent him!! Not I WAS or I WILL BE , but I AM!
THE ETERNAL GOD! THE UNCHANGEABLE ONE! The One Who says in Malachi 3:6, "I am the Lord, I change not!"
[e] In essence, what he had to say was, THE GOD WHO WAS WITH YOUR GRANDPARENTS AND GREAT GRANDPARENTS HAS NOT CHANGED, NEVER WILL CHANGE, AND WANTS TO DELIVER YOU!!
What a glorious message! AFTER 200 YEARS! Hallelujah!!
[f] It is interesting to note that the lady looked upon as the high priestess of New Age, Shirley McLean, has used this title blasphemously for herself, saying, "I AM THAT I AM!"
[a] I think it helps to understand the picture, when we realise HOW the Israelites had become enslaved in Egypt!
[b] You will remember how the brothers of Joseph rose up against him, and sold him into slavery, but that how God protected him, and he actually became a wise and respected ruler in Egypt.
In the time of great famine, he became reunited with his family and they moved down to Egypt.
[c] In the first chapter of Exodus we read that they were multiplying so quickly, that the Egyptians became afraid, and a new king who was unaware of Joseph's great contribution to the welfare of his country, made his people slaves.
[e] But you know, there is a sense in which they had become the VICTIMS of their own ANCESTRAL MISDEEDS!
Yes they were SLAVES, because of SIN!
[f] I think we can see in a very real sense what God meant, when He said to Moses sometime later in Exodus 20:5, that He would visit "the iniquities of the fathers upon the children unto the third and forth generation."
[g] It was a MALIGNANT MISDEED which grew to fill a nation!
As we can see the results were still being acted out on the CHILDREN'S CHILDREN!
OUR SIN AND MISDEEDS OFTEN AFFECT MANY PEOPLE APART FROM OURSELVES!
[h] If we think about it, we are all in some way the product of our ancestors actions whether like mine, they obviously moved away from the Ross clan in Scotland over to Ireland, or perhaps intermarry with others of another colour of hair, or another race, or whatever!
All of these things affect, our prejudice, or upbringing, our accent, our appearance, our attitudes etc.
[i] There are other applications also, like the parent abusing their child, because they have perhaps been abused themselves when they were children!!
[a] There is never anything disjointed in God's plans. Not only does He command Moses to GO from the land of Midian, but also at the same time, away down in Egypt, He commands his brother Aaron to GO also and to MEET MOSES IN THE WILDERNESS!! (4:27)
[b] Aaron may not have been looked upon as the leader, but he was the mouthpiece for Moses, who wouldn't have got far without him!
Do YOUR bit for the Kingdom!!
[c] As you and I go through the year ahead, God goes before us in preparation
EVERY STEP OF THE WAY IS PLANNED IF WE ARE WALKING WITH GOD!
[d] The songwriter says, "I'm following Jesus ONE STEP AT A TIME!"
There is no other way to follow only STEP BY STEP BY STEP.
[e] In the early hours of one morning, I was counselling someone to take one step and one day at a time, and they said to me "BUT I WANT TO KNOW WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT WEEK!!"
[f] If we become over concerned with what's round the next corner, we will stumble in our present step and perhaps fall.
[g] Job says, "NOW THOU NUMBEREST MY STEPS!" (Job 14:16)
In other words, He knows each step in detail, over the ROUGH AND THE SMOOTH!
[h] The Psalmist David says, "THE STEPS OF A GOOD MAN ARE ORDERED BY THE LORD." (Psalm 37:23)
[i] In the words of Isaiah (30:21), God was saying to Moses at the burning bush, the same as He says to you and me in the early stages of this new year, "THIS IS THE WAY, WALK YE IN IT!"
[a] Each one of us can claim for the new year, the promise of God to Moses, "CERTAINLY I WILL BE WITH THEE!"
[b] God can help us VICTORIOUSLY to face even the seemingly impossible situation, FOR HE IS WITH US!
[c] The miraculous life changing God of the Bible is the great "I AM" Who is the SAME TODAY!!
[d] We walk a PREPARED PATH!! Every step is planned, as we seek to fulfil God's plan for our lives!
BUT LET US BE SURE WE WALK GOD'S WAY!!
[e] We must continually remember the words of Solomon in Proverbs 14:12, where he says,
"THERE IS A WAY WHICH SEEMETH RIGHT UNTO A MAN, BUT THE ENDS THEREOF ARE THE WAYS OF DEATH."
and again in Proverbs 3:6, where it says,
"IN ALL THY WAYS ACKNOWLEDGE HIM AND HE SHALL DIRECT THY PATHS."
[f] Some time ago someone gave us this little verse which I would like to share with you.
Don't look to the bigness of your need....
Look to the bigness of your God!
Your circumstances are hindrances to seeing MY ABILITIES!
If you keep your eyes on your circumstances,
The devil will use your circumstances to defeat you
And accuse the Word of God ... the Written and the Living Word.
YOUR VICTORY is in keeping your eyes on the bigness of your God
and HIS ABILITY.
He has promised to take you STEP BY STEP BY STEP...
Not all at once.... but step by step and......
EACH STEP WILL BE A MIRACLE!!
