TO THOSE IN CHRIST JESUS
Reading: Romans 8:1-16
Text verse 1
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit”
[a] This morning, we looked at our text in verse 1 of Romans 8, and the fact of there being NO CONDEMNATION for those who are truly “IN CHRIST”, endeavoring to live IN THE SPIRIT!
[b] The forgiveness of God is truly a wondrous thing to us who are so undeserving!
[c] During a visit to the royal stables, by King George III he took special notice of one of the stable boys, for something about him won his favour, and the King treated him kindly.
Shortly afterwards, the boy stole some oats, and the head groom dismissed him immediately.
The King again visited the stables and noticing the absence of the boy, enquired what had happened. Upon hearing the story, he sent immediately for the boy to be brought to him. The boy stood there, face to face with his monarch, a convicted thief! He was trembling, and looking very pale. The King asked him if it was true, and the boy could not even lift his eyes towards the King, but just stood crying. He knew he was guilty, and stood without excuse! The King saw how sorry the boy was for his sin, and placed his hand on the boy’s head, with the words, “I FORGIVE YOU.” He then gave orders that the boy be restored to his position in the stables. We can only imagine the thrill that came to that lad’s heart on hearing the words of his King, “I forgive you.”
[a] Our text speaks about us being “IN CHRIST JESUS” We have spoken before as to how the Bible looks at us as “BEING BAPTISED INTO CHRIST BY THE HOLY SPIRIT!”
It is speaking about the day we met Jesus, invited Him into our hearts and thus were saved.
[b] Now if you were to be baptised in water, you would be immersed into that water - in the same way, we are immersed INTO CHRIST - BY THE HOLY SPIRIT!
[c] When God looks at us as Christians, He sees us as IN CHRIST! He sees us IN THE PURITY OF CHRIST! He sees us IN THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF CHRIST! That is, ONLY if we are living IN THE SPIRIT, AND NOT THE FLESH!
We spoke in detail of this in the morning meeting.
[d] We said how it was so essential that we lived, INWARDLY, the life of Christ!
[e] It didn’t mean that we were perfect, and there would be many times when we would have to come and seek the Lord’s forgiveness - there would be times when we would perhaps UNWILLINGLY yield to temptation!
[f] WILFUL SIN is another thing entirely. ARE WE LIVING FOR GOD IN OUR HEARTS? HOW REAL IS GOD THERE??
[g] Often we speak, not only of how WE ARE IN CHRIST, as in verse 1, but also the fact that HE IS IN US, as in v.10!
[a] In 2 Corinthians 13:5, we read,
“Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, EXCEPT YE BE REPROBATES.”
Amplified Bible says REPROBATES means “COUNTERFEITS, DISPROVED ON TRIAL
Phillips translation says, “UNLESS YOU ARE NOT REAL CHRISTIANS AT ALL!” which if you think about it is the same.
[c] Sometimes, we’re not very happy that God should test or try us? “O Lord, why me? Why are you putting me through this?”
[d] In one of our corps some years ago, one of our young soldiers had a dilemma! (Isobel Sharp) Her employer said she had to wear a sweat-shirt advertising a brewery, when working up, with the public, in Edinburgh's Prince’s Street.
Thank God, she was true to her faith and conviction, and she refused, at the risk of losing her job. God honoured her for that decision, and she was told to wear another sweatshirt, with just the name of the organisation concerned.
[e] It is never easy to stand for Christ! When we were at Buckhaven, one of our Junior Soldiers had a problem. Her science class at school had brewed beer, and the science teacher asked them all to try it. Shiona refused, and before the whole class, told them why. Not an easy decision! But thank God for her sincerity!
[f] Easy to
sing, “Stand up, Stand up for Jesus” but when it comes to the crunch, it sometimes takes some doing! BUT
EACH VICTORY WILL HELP US SOME OTHER TO WIN!
[a] We all have different tests to undergo. They vary greatly!
[b] To some the Lord will come as He did to Peter, and he will point to that which is nearest and dearest to us, and He will say simply, “Lovest thou Me more than these?” Like Peter, our immediate response would probably be, “Yae Lord!”
Jesus may say to us “PROVE IT!”
[c] We show the depth of our love for Him through action!
He says, “If ye love me, keep my commandments!”
[d] Some time ago, I was speaking to someone, who was busily expressing how much the Lord meant to them - BUT THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG IN THEIR LIVES THAT THEY WERE UNWILLING TO PUT RIGHT!
[e] I said to them, “That thing means more to you than the Lord does!” They eventually agreed that it was true, and they were UNWILLING to put the Lord first!
[f] The dangers of living to the flesh instead of the Spirit are very great in all our lives.
[g] The Lord makes it very clear in His Word, that if we place anything in a higher place of importance in our lives than Him, then we are not worthy of Him!
[a] I wonder has the Spirit of God caused anything to hit home to your heart as we have discussed these things from His Word?
[b] Perhaps there is something in your life that has been taking prominence and precedence over the Lord!
[c] Perhaps there is something you know you’ve got to put right with God.
[d] We would invite you to do that just now, and come to the Mercy seat.
GOD WAITS TO MEET YOUR NEED!
WILL YOU LET HIM??
[e] I would like to play a song which may help you make up your mind positively for the Lord.
Please listen to the words as it is played.
