Reading: Luke 14:16-27
[a] One of the problems of evangelism is 'preaching to the
[b] One of the difficulties Christian ministers face, is that often
in our Gospel meetings, we find we are preaching to Christian
Often in our meetings, the message of the Gospel is blunted,
because the preacher is not convinced that there are unsaved people
[c] Sometimes, Gospel meeting preparation is difficult, because it
is not possible to prepare with conviction, if you don't know
whether or not unsaved people will be present. Some Christians
have not invited an unsaved person to a meeting for years!!
[d] Sometimes the only meeting some Christians attend, for their
own spiritual food, is a meeting that should be meant for the unsaved!
[e] It often means that a kind of bland mixture of ministry
ensues, which neither meets one need or the other to the full!
[f] If we are to be successful in the work of evangelism, the only
way is to redress that balance, so that we will see the right
ministry to the right people, thereby through the Spirit,
accomplishing the right results.
[g] It is insufficient on it's own, that we come to our
meetings, enjoy them, are a blessing one to the other, and go
home again, having received our little heavenly pep-pill to keep
us going over the next week!
SELF PRESERVATION IS NOT WHAT THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH IS ABOUT!!
WE ARE RAISED UP BY GOD TO BE A MISSION TO THE UNCONVERTED!!
WE SHOULD BE ABOUT THE BUSINESS OF EXTENDING AND BUILDING UP
During the Welsh revival at the turn of the century, it was
said, "Every Christian is becoming an evangelist!" And so it should
be, for the Bible states very clearly, that we are, every one,
"put in trust with the Gospel!" (1 Thes. 2:4)
POINT 1 SERVICE
[a] There are many ways of service, and none of them must
be belittled, or thought to be beneath us! Every work for God
has it's place!
[b] BUT LET ME SAY, THAT VERY FEW OF THOSE FORMS OF SERVICE ARE
DIRECTLY LINKED TO THE WINNING OF THE LOST - UNLESS THEY HAPPEN TO
WANDER INTO OUR HALL!
[c] PERHAPS I COULD ON THIS OCCASION HIGHLIGHT ONE OF THE, NOT
VERY POPULAR MINISTRIES, WHICH IS VERY PRECIOUS TO ME!
[d] I am always thrilled when I hear of a convert
through public house ministry, or perhaps read about it in
the War Cry, because it is a form of witness directly to the
unsaved where they are!
POINT 2 THE SHARP END
[a] To me, the pubs have GOT TO BE A MINISTRY TO
THE UNCONVERTED! I never thought, before coming into the
Salvation Army, that I would be able to go into pubs - I hate even the
smell of alcohol - it used to turn my stomach!!
[b] But I don't think in all conscience I could go, if it were just
to sell papers or collect money!
I have always gone to perform a ministry that is very special to me!
[c] When I’ve gone into a new appointment for the first time,
many have thought it most peculiar that I wouldn’t start pubs
each week, without having a prayer first!
[d] Maybe sometimes you're tired after a hard day, and you've to
stop and spend time speaking to someone, or singing, EVEN
PRAYING WITH PEOPLE in a crowded bar as on occasions I have been asked
BUT THE VALUE OF THEIR SOULS IS TRULY WORTH ANY EFFORT PUT IN!
[e] What a wonderful privilege it is to go into these
places with the Gospel!
POINT 3 UNSEEN RESULTS
[a] We do not always see results - but it doesn't mean nothing
[b] Before going to Bible College, I was out selling the War Cry at
public houses in our local area, and I met a young man in one
bar, who used to go to the Sunday School and the youth
movements in the Elim Pentecostal Church in which I grew up.
[c] I was asked to sing a verse of 'The Old Rugged Cross' before leaving, which
[d] What I didn't know until years later, how God had used that simple act.
David gave his testimony in the church,(by that time as a youth leader) and
He told how hearing me sing the song, had been a turning point
in his life. God had used it to turn his life around.
[e] I REALLY DO BELIEVE GOD WILL JUDGE US FOR OUR NEGLECT OF
SOMETHING WHICH IN A VERY SPECIAL WAY HE HAS ENTRUSTED TO YOU AND
ME, WHO ARE HIS INSTRUMENTS!
[f] There is nothing in this whole wide world that is a
substitute for personal witness directly to the unsaved!
IT IS EVERY CHRISTIAN'S TASK, TO BE AN EVANGELIST!
[g] Without effective evangelism, THE CHURCH DIES!
[a] Why did Christ send out His evangelists TWO BY TWO??
[b] I would suggest it was because THEY NEEDED EACH OTHER!!
[c] IF WE ARE TO EXPECT GOD TO DO GREAT THINGS IN THE DAYS AHEAD,
WE NEED TO COMMIT OURSELVES TO MISSION, AND TO WORK WITH ONE
ANOTHER FOR THE GOOD OF CHRIST'S KINGDOM!
[d] WE NEED TO BE MORE 'UNSAVED CENTRED' IN OUR THINKING!
[e] Let us grasp every opportunity, we've got TO KEEP AT IT,
like the spider in Robert the Bruce's cave, and go out and win
many more souls for Jesus!
[f] Every Christian has been ENTRUSTED WITH THE GOSPEL!
Are we willing to take God literally, and lay our all on the alter
for the salvation of the world. That was the vision of the
and REMEMBER! WE ARE GOD'S HANDS! WE ARE GOD'S FEET! WE ARE
[g] IF WE ARE FAITHFUL, in prayer and in action, and
we ALREADY KNOW GOD IS FAITHFUL, then there is NO LIMIT to what
can be accomplished!
IS THERE PERHAPS A NEED FOR A RENEWED COMMITMENT JUST NOW?
