It goes without saying, at the beginning of these discipleship classes, that before we can be a disciple, we must make the decision to give ourselves completely to Jesus, and, weighing up all the consequences, make the decision to follow Him - lock stock and barrel! There are some people, who never seem to make anything of their Christian lives! All too often, they are putting the cart before the horse, and trying to be disciples, without being born again into newness of life in Christ!

Because it is a STEP OF FAITH, knowing that He will only lead us where is best for us and His Kingdom, we have no way of knowing where it will eventually lead! It is a one step at a time walk, with the Saviour. Now exactly that same principle has applied to people like the missionary David Livingston - he had no idea where his dedication would lead him. William Booth, when he found Christ in his youth, had no idea that one day he would be the instrument of God in forming the Salvation Army! The same applies to any of the great names of Christian history - Florence Nightingale, Martin Luther, John Wesley, Billy Graham, Cliff Richard......

There is a sense, that to be a true disciple of Jesus, we must give up claim on OURSELVES, OUR wants and wishes. The WILL of Jesus comes first to one of His true disciples! As Jesus said in the Garden of Gethsemane, "Not My will, but Thine be done." The picture of true disciples is found in the beginning of the Gospels, when the disciples were first called to follow Jesus. When we make that initial commitment of giving our lives to Christ, that doesn't mean, we have arrived! It's not an end! It's a new beginning! WE ARE STARTING OUT WITH JESUS! As we travel along the Christian pathway, we will come to forks in the road, and we must decide which way is for us - one will be God's way, and the other, that of our own will!! The Bible says, "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the ends thereof are the ways of death." (Proverbs 14:12)

Also, we will, as we travel with the Lord, become more aware, day by day, of our TRAVELLING COMPANIONS - and will slowly come to realize, that some of them may not glorify God! They could take many guises:- Habit, friendships, words, actions - things that never cost us a thought before, such as perhaps temper, or something unworthy of Christ, will now stand out like a sore thumb, in our newness of life, and it will dawn on us, that certain things simply do not fit into our walk with the Saviour, and with His help will need to go.
These realisations, are the work of the Holy Spirit, as He enlightens us as to the will and the way of God. Any true Christian, will soon tell you, this is something that continues to happen, the whole of our lives, as God purifies and refines us - making us more and more like Jesus. This can only happen, through the power of the Holy Spirit, as we allow Him to come into our lives and fill us to overflowing with His PRESENCE, His LOVE, and His POWER.

Those first disciples were not just called to sort of aimlessly follow Jesus around - He said, "I will make you FISHERS OF MEN!" In other words, they were, as disciples, to have as their main aim, the winning of others to the Lord Jesus Christ! They were first and foremost, to be witnesses for Him! Every true disciple IS. We could look at it as two distinct steps, and for us to truly follow Christ, one must lead to the other! The first is TO FOLLOW! The second is to literally become FISHERS OF MEN! It's one thing to OBEY THE CALL! But it can be quite another to FULFIL THE PURPOSE of the call!
