BLOOD OF CHRIST

                               Reading: 1 JOHN 1

    INTRODUCTION

[a] Ancient man has long looked at BLOOD as life.
[b] I suppose they had a point!  After  all, if you had an accident and
were losing blood, it would be a  first  priority to stem that flow, as
if you lost too much, you would surely die!
[c] If we're feeling unwell, and  go  to  the  doctor, one of the first
things he will do, to diagnose our  illness,  is to take a blood sample
and send it off to the  lab,  and  they  can any number of things about
you, just from that couple of drops of blood.
[d] We've all heard of genetic  fingerprinting, where, from your blood,
they can sample your DNA, and no-one else  in the world has a DNA which
exactly matches yours!! IT IS THE FINGERPRINT OF YOUR LIFE!!
[e] We all know how important it  has  become today in solving rape and
murder cases, not to mention proving the fatherhood of babies.
[f] I remember learning in first aid,  that if someone had an accident,
and was losing a lot of blood,  say  from their leg, then you would put
on a tourniquet, and tighten it until the blood stopped!
[g] But I also learned, that I had  to  keep a careful eye on the time,
for if I didn't loosen it again within  twenty minutes or so, I ran the
risk of actually 'killing' the limb, because of the lack of blood.
[h] One of the things  that  makes  Aids  such a horrendous disease, is
that because it is a  blood  disease,  it  permeates  every part of the
    body!!

    POINT 1

[a] If, due to  an  illness,  your  blood  supply  has  diminished to a
dangerous level, then, you will be given a blood transfusion!
[b] That is of course,  unless  you  are  a Jehovah's Witness, in which
case you would rather die, and let your loved ones die!
This is due to a misconception of  Scriptural teaching, when it says we
are to have nothing to do with blood. (Acts 15:20 & 29)
[c] Now it obviously wasn't  speaking  about  blood transfusions, as it
was not a technology available for centuries to come.
[d] In the days in which it was written, it was common practice for the
blood of heathen sacrifices to be drunk.
I remember seeing a missionary film, in  which an animal was killed, by
slitting it's throat, and the blood  collected  and drunk whilst it was
still warm - this was a part of the ceremony!
[e] In the early Church, many  of  the  converts were from that kind of
background, and were feeling their  way  in  their new-found faith - so
they needed guidance in what  practices  were  right  and wrong for the
    Christian in this respect.
[f] Blood of course, is  in  itself,  a  living  thing - you've got the
white corpuscles and the  red  corpuscles  and  all  the antibodies and
    immune-system cells.
[g] If the blood supply to  the  brain  is restricted, even for quite a
short time, irreversible damage will be caused to the brain cells.
[h] As the blood circulates, it keeps the body healthy, removing toxins
and viruses, and sending it's version of the emergency services, racing
    to an injury or infection.
[i] So, when we speak of our 'life's blood', we are not kidding.

    POINT 2

[a] Is it any wonder then, that  Christians put so much emphasis of the
Blood of Christ? For IT  IS  IN  THAT  BLOOD  ALONE, THAT SPIRITUAL AND
    ETERNAL LIFE IS FOUND!
[b] As a young officer, I was  told,  "DON'T TALK ABOUT BEING WASHED IN
THE BLOOD OF CHRIST - NO-ONE WILL KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN!"
[*] After preaching about  the  Blood  of  Christ  in  a London meeting
whilst at Bible college,  a  man  shouted  at  me,  that  as  long as I
preached like that, I would never be a successful officer!
Well, a quarter of a century later, I'm still preaching about the Blood
of Christ, cleansing, from all sin -  why? BECAUSE IT IS THE MESSAGE OF
    THE SCRIPTURE!!
[c] If someone says to me "I DON'T WANT YOUR BUTCHER'S RELIGION!!"
That's fine by me,  but  I  have  a  duty  to  tell them, that "WITHOUT
SHEDDING OF BLOOD, IS NO REMISSION!" (Hebrews 9:22)
I have a duty to tell them that "WE ARE NOT REDEEMED WITH CORRUPTIBLE
THINGS SUCH AS SILVER AND GOLD, BUT WITH THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIST!"
    (1 Peter 1:18)
I have a duty to tell them, that  "THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST, GOD'S SON
CLEANSETH US FROM ALL SIN!" (1 John 1:7)
I have a duty to tell them the words of Jesus as He instituted the Last
Supper, "THIS IS MY BLOOD OF THE NEW TESTAMENT WHICH IS SHED FOR MANY!"
    (Mark 14:24)
[*] When John the Baptist saw Jesus coming to him, he said, "Behold the
Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." (John 1:29)
He was proclaiming the Sacrificial Lamb,  Whose blood would be shed for
    sinful mankind!
[d] I have no authority  or  wish  to  change  that  message, for it is
proclaiming the only way of Salvation! It  is the message that has been
entrusted into my care, when God called  me  to preach His Word, and it
is the message  through  which  I  have  seen  many  lives  changed and
    transformed by God's power.

    CONCLUSION

[a] If, tonight, you are a sinner,  who has not yet sought forgiveness,
then, I make no bones about  it,  you  are  on your way to a Christless
    Hell!
[b] If you continue to reject Christ, there is no hope for you!
[c] He shed His Blood for your Salvation!  "He bare our sins in His Own
body  on  the  tree."  (1   Peter   2:24)   "He  was  wounded  for  our
transgressions; He was bruised for our iniquities." (Isaiah 53:5)
[d] The wonderful thing  is,  that  it  doesn't  matter what sins we've
committed, for if we come  to  Him  in  repentance, forgiveness will be
    ours!!

An American evangelist was involved in  a  car accident, and taken to a
    Roman Catholic hospital.
He lay there for several months, and  on  a nearby bed was a young man,
who was very ill, and greatly  troubled  in view of his possible death.
The evangelist felt he should  say  something,  but found the young man
    very difficult to approach.
From time to time an old  priest  came  to hear his confession and give
    him absolution.
One day, as the old priest was about  to leave, he said, "Father, it is
very strange, I have done everything I  know  to  do, and yet I have no
peace. How can I be  sure  that  God  has  put  away my sins? The older
priest looked at him  compassionately  and  then exclaimed, "Surely the
Blood of Christ ought  to count for something!"
As though a flash of divine light had entered his soul, the young man's
countenance changed. He looked up  eagerly  and  exclaimed, "Ah yes, it
counts for everything. I  can  trust  that."  The  evangelist noticed a
change, and a new  peace  come  into  the  young  man's  life from that
    moment.

Many years ago, a lonely  traveller  was  attacked by a highwayman, who
ordered, "YOUR MONEY OR YOUR LIFE!"
As the robber was about to  leave,  the traveller leaned over and said,
"I've got something very precious  to  give  you!  You may not think so
now, but the time will come, when you will bitterly regret this kind of
living. When that day comes, remember this, "THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST,
GOD'S SON' CLEANSETH US FROM  ALL  SIN."  With  a snarl, the highwayman
    fled into the darkness.

The traveller, who was a preacher,  went  to a certain town, many years
later, and preached on the same text.
At the close of the meeting, a man came to him, with tears in his eyes,
and said, "Your text was  the  very  one  you  whispered in my ear many
years ago! Yes I was the highwayman  who  robbed you, and that word you
gave me, just kept after me like a hound, dogging me everywhere I went,
until at last it led me  to  Christ  in  confession and faith." By that
time, he was one of the leading  townsmen, and he said to the preacher,
who incidentally was John Wesley,  "All  that  I  am  now, I owe to the
Blessed Lord, and to you sir."
